CHAPTER 7

ELIZABETH

As promised, the fire in the game room was burning brightly but most of all… warmly. While Charles, Jane, and the Willoughby sisters were playing a card game and drinking tea in the corner, Elizabeth chose to join Mrs. Hill and Noah Miller in front of the fireplace. While Mrs. Hill sat frozen like a statue in her chair, Miller paced back and forth, as if his feet had to keep time with his racing thoughts. Elizabeth could not help but sit and watch him as walked.

“Mr. Miller, I am quite sure that Angeline is fine, wherever she is. There is no need to fret without a good reason.”

Noah scoffed and turned to Elizabeth with incredulity.

“‘No need to fret,’ did you say? We are trapped in a secluded manor, during a terrible storm, and playing some kind of hideous game where our loved ones are disappearing. Will you fret if your sister is the next to go?”

Elizabeth laughed though she did not mean to.

“It is not funny, of course. I simply do not believe Jane will be leaving us any time soon.”

Darcy appeared in the doorway of the game room, his shadow dancing on the floor in front of the fire. She could practically sense him before he even arrived.

“Why are you so confident that Jane is protected from the rules of the game?” Fitzwilliam asked as he took a seat near the bookshelves. Elizabeth appreciated that her sister was so engrossed in her game that she was not paying attention to their conversation at all.

“Because I am quite sure that if someone attempted to abscond anywhere with my sister, she would make it known. I trust Jane to fight tooth and nail for her place in this little mystery you have planned.”

“You trust me to what?” Jane asked, suddenly aware she was the topic of conversation on the other side of the room. Elizabeth waved at her to return to her game.

“Do not worry yourself, sweet Jane. We are simply discussing the other game being played at the moment. And the fact that two people are now missing from it.”

Darcy sat forward in his chair inquisitorially.

“Two people? I was only aware of the one.”

Mrs. Hall turned and scowled viciously at Mr. Darcy.

“Do not pretend that my darling Jonathan is going to return to us on this day. He might have drowned in a small river out there by now! And you did nothing to stop him when he charged out that door.”

With a resigned smile, Darcy shook his head.

“I could not have stopped him even if I had wanted to, which I did not. Your husband was intent on going out into the storm and proving that I was a liar. What happened to him once he left the house does not confirm anything except that I am telling you the truth. Until the storm passes, this is the safest place for you to be.”

Elizabeth watched the gentleman as he spoke and she could not help but notice the playful sparkle in his eye.
